Lesson 1: Unit Introduction and Early Relations Between Colonists and Native Americans

This lesson will introduce and establish an understanding of the term “treaty.” The lesson will then also explore three major battles/wars between colonists and Native Americans before the formal establishment of the US Government. These battles and wars will show the extremely violent measures that both colonists and Native peoples resorted to in order to resolve conflict. After defining what a treaty is and go over some early key battles, students will then be introduced to the timeline project which will be built upon throughout the eight lesson unit. Students will understand the purpose of the historical timeline project and then begin constructing their own by adding the three main battles discussed in class.
