<text>This unit has provided insight into major treaties, acts, and legislation implemented by the US Government that either directly or indirectly affect Native American peoples. Lesson 8 will continue further into the 20th century and look into the rationale behind the development of the Native American Reservation System. Starting with the Indian Reorganization Act in 1934, this lesson will analyze the development and rise of the reservation system into the 21st century. Students will be given information regarding the reservation system in the present day United States and then, based off the information, draw their own broader conclusions about its effectiveness. The reservation system in the 21st century will be examined as well as the role it plays in preserving or undermining Native American cultures and identities.</text>

<text>This lesson is designed to be used in middle school and high school classrooms and should take approximately 55 minutes to teach. In this lesson, students will be introduced to the discrepancy between the Native American history presented in U.S. History textbooks and the reality of Native American existence, as textbooks often exclude Native Americans from more modern contexts (post-1900), making it appear that Native Americans no longer exist. By analyzing their history textbooks and researching Native Americans today, students will have the opportunity to observe this discrepancy firsthand and then be able to engage in conversation about why this discrepancy exists. Students should end the lesson understanding that even though Native Americans are often excluded from history textbooks, they still exist and have a rich history and culture. At the end of this lesson, students will contemplate why history textbooks and their authors represent Native Americans in this way, which is a question that students will continue to examine as the unit progresses.</text>

<text>This lesson is designed to be used in middle school or high school classrooms and will take approximately 50-60 minutes to teach. In this lesson, students will consider treaties in relation to promises and what it means when they are broken. Students will then investigate the history of the Osage Nation, learning about their ancestral lands and migration west. Students will also examine the process of how the Osage lost most of their land through an analysis of the treaties that the U.S. government made with the Osage. In discussing these treaties, students will consider the government’s (mis)treatment of the Osage and its failure to uphold the conditions of the treaties, as it allowed white settlers to settle on Osage land and failed to intervene on the Osage Nation’s behalf. By creating a timeline of these events and explaining their importance, students will understand that this treatment was not an isolated event but characterized the relationship between the Osage Nation and the U.S. government. At the end of this lesson, students should be able to recognize the patterns of exploitation and injustice in the U.S. government’s treatment of the Osage and predict possible consequences of this treatment on the government’s relationship with the Osage Nation today. Additionally, students will consider possible explanations for why Osage history is excluded from history textbooks.</text>
